What I collect, which is almost nothing

This site has no analytics, no advertising trackers and no cookies. The only personal information collected is the email address you give me, and only if you give it.

1. Who is responsible

2. What is collected

If you subscribe

Your email address, and a note of which page you subscribed from. That second one is a hidden field in the form; it tells me that (say) the about page converts better than the homepage. It is not tied to anything else about you.

Once you are on the list, beehiiv — the platform that sends the newsletter — records the ordinary things an email platform records: whether an issue was opened, which links were clicked, roughly where the open happened, and what kind of device it was on. I use this to tell whether a story landed. I do not use it to build a profile of you, and I do not attempt to identify individual readers from it.

If you only read the site

Nothing is collected about you. There is no analytics script, no advertising pixel and no cookie of any kind on this site. The signup form is mine, not an embedded widget, so no third party loads anything on these pages or sees that you visited.

The only thing stored in your browser is a single value called tmf-theme, which remembers whether you chose light or dark. It is not a cookie, it never leaves your device, it contains no personal information, and clearing your browser data removes it.

Like every website, the server that delivers these pages keeps standard request logs — IP address, time, page requested, browser — for security and troubleshooting. I do not mine them.

3. Why I am allowed to hold it

For the newsletter: because you asked for it. That consent is the entire basis, and you can withdraw it at any time using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of every issue. One click, no confirmation step, no attempt to talk you out of it.

For server logs: a legitimate interest in keeping the site up and not being attacked. If you are in the UK or EU, that is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR; the newsletter itself is 6(1)(a).

4. Who else sees it

The subscriber list is held by beehiiv, which processes it on my instructions in order to send the newsletter. Their privacy terms are at https://www.beehiiv.com/privacy. Because they operate from the United States, your email address is stored there.

Nobody else. To be specific, because this is the part people actually worry about: sponsors never receive the subscriber list, or any part of it, or any way of contacting you directly. A sponsor buys a slot inside an issue. They do not buy you. The list is not sold, rented, swapped or shared, and there is no arrangement under which that could happen.

The exception is the ordinary one: if I am legally required to hand something over, I will, and I will tell you unless I am prohibited from doing so.

5. How long it is kept

Your email address stays on the list until you unsubscribe. After you unsubscribe, beehiiv retains a suppression record — essentially just your address on a do-not-send list — because that is the mechanism that stops you being re-added by accident. Ask me to delete it entirely and I will.

6. What you can ask for

Whatever jurisdiction you are in, I will honour all of these:

• A copy of what I hold about you.
• Correction of anything wrong.
• Deletion.
• Withdrawal of consent, which is the unsubscribe link, but you can also just email me.
• A machine-readable export, if you want to take it elsewhere.

Email support@reallycreativeideas.com and I will deal with it within 30 days, usually much sooner. There is no fee.

Under Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act you may also complain to the Personal Data Protection Commission. If you are in the UK or EU, you may complain to your national data protection authority. I would rather you told me first, but you are not obliged to.

7. Children

This is a newsletter about business history written for adults. It is not directed at children, and I do not knowingly collect anything from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has subscribed, email me and I will remove the address.

8. If this changes

If I add anything that collects data — analytics, comments, an embedded signup widget — this page gets updated before that goes live, and the date at the top changes. Material changes to how the newsletter itself uses your data will be announced in the newsletter, not buried here.
