In December 2014, two ACS guys opened a nightclub in Clarke Quay.

Four months later, they lost $1 million.

These two scraped together $35,000 — their last savings — and started a snack company.

Salted egg yolk chips.

They had no clue what they were doing. No food background. Just noticed that everyone was posting pictures of salted egg yolk on everything — buns, pastries, chicken wings.

But no one had put it in packaged snacks.

30 rounds of R&D later, they launched at a pop-up in Suntec City.

100 packets. Sold out in 6 hours.

From nightclub to snack empire.

Three lessons from the guys who lost $1 million and found gold:

1. The biggest pivots look random but aren't — They didn't suddenly become "food people." Jonathan had been in F&B marketing for years. He just noticed what others missed: a flavor everyone loved, in a format no one had tried.

2. Speed of recovery beats magnitude of failure — They went from $1M loss to new venture in months. Not years. The gap between failure and next attempt matters more than the size of the failure.

3. Constraints force creativity — No investors. No fancy kitchen. They rented a restaurant's kitchen from 10pm to morning, producing chips by hand. Started with pop-ups because they couldn't afford a store.

Jonathan said it best: "When you lose a million dollars... there's no sitting around. You've got to fix the situation and see what you can make out of the mess."

The nightclub that failed?

They named their snack company after the failure.

Golden Duck = the color of salted eggs.
