Hew Ah Kow / Half-Boiled Egg Maker

If you've ever had half-boiled eggs at a kopitiam, you've seen it.
That small yellow plastic thing. Pour boiling water in. Wait for it to drain. Perfect eggs. Every time.
Here's what I didn't know until recently:
It was invented by a bulldozer operator in the jungles of Kelantan.
In 1973, Hew Ah Kow worked at a lumber camp with about 20 guys who wanted nothing more than half-boiled eggs for breakfast.
Problem was, they kept overcooking them. Put eggs in hot water, go check the engines, refuel the bulldozers, get carried away. Come back to hard-boiled.
Nobody in any R&D lab was trying to solve this. Engineers don't eat breakfast in jungle camps. The problem was invisible to everyone except the people who had it.
So Hew grabbed an Ovaltine can. Punched a hole in the bottom with a nail. Put the eggs in. Poured boiling water over them.
The water dripped out slowly through the hole. When it finished draining — eggs done.
No timer. No electricity. Just gravity.
It took him a year to get the ratio of water to eggs right. A year of trial batches. His colleagues had to eat every failed experiment.
Then a direct-selling stockist rode his motorbike into camp and got stuck overnight by rain. At breakfast, he tasted the most perfect half-boiled eggs he'd ever had. The camp cook pointed to Hew.
The stockist offered RM7,000 for the prototype. Hew sold it.
That stockist took it to a plastic manufacturer who mass-produced it. Hew never patented the original.
Today, that device sits in virtually every kopitiam and mamak stall in Malaysia and Singapore. Millions of eggs, every morning, cooked by gravity and a lumberjack's frustration.
Here's the thing:
Nobody built an egg boiler for decades. Not because it was too hard. Because the people with the problem — lumberjacks, kopitiam owners, the aunty cooking eggs at 5am — were never the people who design kitchen products.
The best products aren't built by people who study problems. They're built by people who are tired of having them.
Hew didn't have an engineering degree. He had an Ovaltine can, a nail, and a year of patience from 20 guys who just wanted decent eggs.
